I noticed Jean Comeau as one of the two drummers with Magella... Wow talk about a small world!! Me and him studied together at Ste-Foy College... Nice to see he did well for himself. [img]biggrin.gif[/img] I also heard him kill a tune on a Sylvain Gagnon CD at one time... That guy can play.

Just curious... will Magella Cormier come back to Montreal anytime in the near future ? If you are still in contact with him, can you give me any news about him ?

I too am a big fan of Magella. Love his playing.

When you say you studied at the Ste-Foy College, are you originally from Quebec City ? Are you drumming in Toronto on a regular bassis or just part-time ?

About the Dave Weckl tune by a Montreal vocal group B?mol 9 shown in my post, most of their CD has great tunes by great artists, and the drumming is great throughout the whole CD !

Yes I do get in touch with him often. He does go down to Montreal now and again. As to him coming back full time, I can't answer that question, I don't know. But I can tell you that I am starting to bug him more and more to come down and do the Montreal Drum Fest once again next year... Since he keeps telling me how he's improved... [img]eek.gif[/img] That's a scary statement to make... He was already killin!!! Right now, he's still keeping a low profile. Involved with various local artists in his home town and practicing like crazy as often as he can.

Someone once told me this anecdote about him. At his first appearance at the Fest in the early nineties, Dave Weckl was also in the line-up that day. Apparently during his performance, Weckl literally ran from backstage to see who was playing, he was blown away and went congratulating him afterwards. He must have done something right...

Yes I am originally from Quebec City, left in 1989. I am not making a living playing drums though. Nevertheless, the passion is definitely so much there. I play/practice whenever I get the chance and funk/Fusion is a main preference, with other musicians I mostly now play "right now" contemporary gospel. Hard to squeeze in time when you work full-time and have a family ( I barely touched the kit this summer!!). I do love the drummer-hang (when time permits) and seek to encourage my drum-buddies who are trying to make it in Toronto. I could almost say that my passion for the drummers themselves is as strong as for the craft. My heart literally goes out to them. Music is a tough business to be in, really tough, with lots of sharks and snakes lurking around. So I try to be there on the side-line and cheer them up whenever I can. Do to others what you would have them do to you is my aim.

I have seen Jean Comeau play a couple of times. Excellent player and VERY Weckl influenced.

I remember to have seen him on TV in the backup band of a singing contest/festival. Also years ago in a jazz band at the university. Like many around this time, he was all Weckl: from the cherry yammys/brass piccolo up to the mullet... [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

The last i heard was that he moved back to 'Sept Iles' and is teaching there. I met one of his present students and he told me that 'Magella' wasn't adapting the Montreal urban lifestyle too well.
